J.M. Wood III, Mid-Century Artist/Mid-Century Modern Art (JMWoodArt.com) is devoted exclusively to the promotion and sale of the paintings and drawings of Joseph Miller Wood III (1929 - 2018).

Wood was an artist and educator who described himself as a “colorist” and taught Josef Alber’s relational theory of color throughout his career. All of his modern abstract paintings are compositional experiments in the use of color to create the illusion of space and form. They are organized into five series you can learn about below, or you can visit the gallery for the series to view all the paintings and drawings in each series.

Studio Series (1963-68)

The “Studio” Series of ten paintings-- some of which include partial portraits of the artist-- explore reflection and light in Wood’s cramped bell-tower studio at Williams College where he taught from 1963 to 1968.

Window Series (1968-93)

The “Windows” Series of thirty paintings is Wood’s most fulsome and varied exploration of the use of color in a compositionally similar series of paintings, nearly all of which feature the same double-sash window and frame.

Window Images Series (1975-79)

The “Window Images” Series of five paintings were nearly all destroyed by Wood who found them to be unsuccessful attempts to further explore some of the themes developed in the “Windows” series from outside the double-sash compositional framework.

Skylight Series (1982-89)

The “Skylight” Series of nine paintings further explore themes developed in the “Windows” series without the double-sash compositional framework, instead employing a variety of pane-like shapes of a variety of sizes organized loosely in horizontal and vertical groupings

Animal Spirits Series (1991-1999)

The “Animal Spirits” Series of twelve paintings are the last that Wood produced and were described by him as “breaking through the window” to move out into the landscape of the Santa Fe area of the American Southwest.
